Most of the current weather fields (temperature, dew point, RH, and barometric pressure) are all instantaneous samples at the time of the observation.
Most of the current weather fields (temperature, dew point, RH, and barometric pressure) are all instantaneous samples at the time of the observation.
Wind is an exception. Wind speed is reported according
to the
National Weather Service standard - sustained winds are a 2-minute
average,
and the wind gust is the highest wind speed in the last 10 minutes. Wind direction is reported as a 1-minute average.
The rainfall, as well as the various highs and lows, is automatically
reset at
midnight every day.

In setting up the station, every effort was made to install the sensors
as close as
possible to their respective meteorological
standards. A summary is
as follows:
Sensor | This station | Meteorological standard |
---|---|---|
Temperature/Humidity | 5 feet above ground | 5 feet above ground |
Rain Gauge | Approx. 6 feet above ground | As low to the ground as possible while avoiding obstructions |
Wind Vane/Anemometer | Approx. 32 feet above ground | 29.5-32.8 ft (9-10m) for ASOS/AWOS; 20 ft for RAWS stations |
Barometer | Mounted indoors | Usually mounted indoors |
